Inspiration: Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen's S/S 2010 collection was the first time I fell in love with pattern design. I think about this collection all the time, and it was a big source of inspiration when creating the prints for our Silkweed birthstone collection.
Something magical happens when you blend natural textures like snakeskin and moth wings with digital techniques. It looks otherworldly like it's almost something you recognize but it's from the future or another planet (McQueen also brilliantly styled the models to look like aliens).
The day McQueen died I skipped whatever university fashion class I had and thought about how these prints were the first thing in fashion that really struck a chord with me, and although I didn't know then that I would become a pattern designer, I knew at the very least I was completely in love with what he had created. Lately, I look at fashion and try to imagine how it would look different if we still had McQueen's point of view making an impact in the design world, but I can't for the life of me imagine what he'd be making now.
